Craig Swift - PE (VA, MD, DC), PE/SE (CA)
craig swift
Craig founded SPRINGPOINT in 2018 after over 15 years of structural engineering experience across a wide variety of building types, ages, and regions. Craig’s path toward the practice of engineering included the standard Lego obsession, a science fair experiment testing the breaking strength of wood species, and an inspiring high school physics teacher. As an engineering student at Virginia Tech he focused on biomechanics and structures, with a construction volunteer experience in Honduras eventually tipping the scales towards a career in the built environment. After an engineering internship in Guatemala, Craig completed graduate studies in structural and earthquake engineering at the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA).
His career has taken him from high-profile projects at southern California film studios to significant buildings in the nation’s capital, to noteworthy universities and historic sites throughout the mid-Atlantic region.
Salvatore (Sal) DiPietro, EIT
Salvatore depietro
Sal is a passionate structural designer with a love for historic buildings and their craftsmanship. His education began with a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Syracuse University. He moved to Chicago to specialize in building envelope design and structures with a Master’s degree in Architectural Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology. During his studies, Sal completed two internships centered in the existing building field. He worked on high-profile adaptive reuse projects, including the Navy Pier Ferris Wheel replacement, Chicago Apple Flagship Store, and the University of Chicago LASR Building Renovation. His internship experience also includes historic façade restoration, bringing him down the side of many historic stone and terra cotta buildings throughout Chicago.
Sal is excited to continue with SPRINGPOINT in Charlottesville and support the company’s role in both new and historic buildings throughout the mid-Atlantic. He looks forward to preserving and expanding the beauty of the historic buildings in his new home.
Julia Tembunkiart - PE
Julie Tembunkiart
Julia has six years of structural engineering experience in the greater Washington, DC area. She began her education in Architecture, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis. Her focus shifted to structural engineering in graduate school where she received a Masters of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus in Structures from the University of Maryland. Throughout her career she has had the privilege of working on a wide variety of projects including new construction, historic restoration, exhibit design, and façade repair, often focusing on where new meets existing by renovating, repairing, or adding to existing structures.
Julia has a passion for engaging with the community including involvement in the Structural Engineering Association of Metropolitan Washington (SEA MW) Young Members Group, SEA MW Forum for Emerging Engineers, Canstruction DC, and Architecture in the Schools.
Mary Doulgas - EIT
Mary douglas
Mary received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech in 2018. She continued at Virginia Tech and, in 2020, received a Master of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus in Structural Engineering. She also completed a research project during her master’s degree studies, focused on the application of virtual wind loads derived from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) database of wind tunnel tests to low-rise steel structures. She also gained experience through several internships working on designing a highway bridge, and developing and verifying structural models, conducting statistical analyses, and performing wood engineering on seismic and wind uplift research projects.
Mary has long had an interest in historic structures after family trips to San Francisco, Colonial Williamsburg, Charleston, Washington, DC and other historic sites throughout the US and Portugal. She is eager to combine her experience and interests at Springpoint.
Julia Hang, PE (VA)
Julie Hang
Julie brings over seven years of structural engineering experience to the SPRINGPOINT team. After receiving her undergraduate degree in civil engineering at Brown University and her graduate degree in structural engineering at the University of California -Berkeley, she began her career as a structural engineer in the Boston area where she primarily focused on new steel and concrete design. Upon moving to Virginia, she integrated her knowledge of new ground-up design with the myriad opportunities for historic preservation this region provides.
Julie has always loved traveling and teaching. She enjoyed performing field research in rural Thailand and Indonesia to study the structural impact of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, as well as teaching at a high school in Seoul, Korea and teaching the civil engineering capstone course at Brown. Her previous projects have ranged from 300’ tall buildings to historic cottage preservation, and various unique and challenging projects in between.
Rachel Robinson - EIT
Rachel Robinson
Rachel studied civil engineering at Brigham Young University before returning to her native California for a master’s degree in structural engineering at California State University, Long Beach. In 2010 she started her career in Los Angeles, where she focused on custom residential projects and seismic design. Later moving to Connecticut, Rachel worked on wood and steel design across a range of projects including historic homes and churches.
Passionate about architecture and structural engineering since elementary school, Rachel has maintained involvement in education and mentorship. She was a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in south Los Angeles, and a mentor to high school students in New Haven, Connecticut. Her collaborations with architects led to joint participation in the Architectural League of New York’s annual Folly sculpture competition. Rachel couldn’t be more excited to bring this broad experience to Charlottesville to be part of the vision and culture of Springpoint.
